Betty Ann Koss Drees

September 30, 1942 — March 1, 2019

Betty Ann (Koss) Drees was born on Sept. 30, 1942, in Bryan, Texas, and died on March 1, 2019, in Buchanan Dam, Texas, at the age of 76 years. She was the daughter of Dr. Walter Eddie Koss and Mrs. Edna Bell (Cook) Koss. Dr. Koss was then a professor of mathematics at Texas A&M and later became a professor at Louisiana Tech University. Mrs. Koss was a registered nurse. Betty graduated from Ruston Louisiana High School in 1960 and enrolled at Texas Women’s University that same year to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a registered nurse. She received her medical training on the TWU campus at the Houston Medical Center and graduated from TWU in 1964 as one of the early registered nurses to receive a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. The bulk of her professional career was devoted to caring for the elderly in nursing homes and home health care. She also taught nursing students for two years.

She met her husband, Bruce, at TWU in Denton on Nov. 4, 1960. He was then a student at Texas A&M and was on the annual Corps Trip for the yearly football game in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex. As an all woman’s school, TWU had an open house and dance for the then all-male Texas A&M students every year. Bruce and Betty married on Aug. 9, 1963. For the next 20 years she was an Army wife and raised four daughters. This time included three years when Bruce was overseas in Korea and Vietnam. After he retired from the Army in 1983, she went with him to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, while he attended seminary. From 1988 on she was a Lutheran pastor’s wife in Texas, a role that she enjoyed.

During retirement she and Bruce took many opportunities to travel. She had been in all 50 states and nearly 40 countries on all seven continents.

She loved the church of their retirement years, Genesis Lutheran in Buchanan Dam, Texas, and enjoyed serving the Lord with her many friends. Nothing gave her greater happiness than serving there with these much loved friends.

She now rests with the Lord Jesus who has called her to her eternal home.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bruce, of Buchanan Dam; her daughters, Becky of Seattle, Washington, Beth and husband John Carlisle of Salt Lake City, Utah, Elaine and husband Casey Finstad of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Emily of Houston; a granddaughter, Lydia Lutes of Berkeley, California; and grandsons Edwin Serikawa of Seattle, and Luke and Micah Finstad of Los Alamos.
