Russell Earl Holmes

July 26, 1944 — May 20, 2019

Russell Earl Holmes, a Vietnam veteran, passed away May 20, 2019 at the age of 74. He was born July 26, 1944 in Brownfield, Texas to Floyd “Buddy” Jackson and Verna L. Cargill, and was later adopted by CW “Rip” Holmes.

After being transferred from Andrews, Russell and Twanna, his wife of 41 years, fell in love with the Texas hill country and lived happily here for 45 years. He loved summers at the lake, fishing, swimming and hunting in the fall. He loved sitting on the porch watching deer with Twanna. Russell proudly gave 38 years to the local phone company before retiring in 2006.

Russell loved building and creating in his shop. A huge fan of Texas A&M sports, countless weekends were spent with his family watching football and passing around a bottle of Bird Dog Whiskey.

He was proud of his son, Russell for his years of service in the military as well as his almost 20 years of service at PEC. He was very proud of his daughter Amy for graduating college and had a special love for his grandchildren, Owen, Corbin, Kya and Connor.

Russell was a devoted husband, father, brother, friend and grandfather. He is survived by his son, Russell E. Holmes Jr. and “wife” Heidi; daughter, Amy Footit and her husband Michael; his brother, Rodney Holmes and wife Donna; sister, Patricia Reece and husband Garland; and also his half-brother, Ross Mason.

Visitation will be held at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 23 at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park near Burnet with Rodney McGee officiating. Those named as honorary pallbearers were Ted Biggs, Ken Armstrong, George Hernandez, Rex Lastly, Bill Culler, Richard Linnabery, Cody Cockroft, and Don Burrell.
