The community is invited to join Emergency Services District 8 Board members, the Oakalla Volunteer Fire Department, and the Briggs Fire Department planning committee at a Town Hall meeting at the Oakalla Volunteer Fire Department at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10.

The Town Hall meeting was called to discuss plans for a new fire station, which will be designed to better serve the Briggs/Oakalla area after the Briggs Volunteer Fire Department was dissolved by the ESD 8 earlier this year.

Briggs and Oakalla residents are invited to come together and hear the planning committee's plans for the new fire station, and are urged to offer suggestions and ideas about their communities' ideal fire station.

Oakalla Volunteer Fire Department Chief and planning committee member Aaron Weeks stated that the Oakalla VFD recently purchased four acres of land in Briggs of US 281, on which the new station will soon be constructed.

“We took over the area after the Briggs VFD was closed,” Weeks said. “The reason why we are building a new station is to make response times better, and to house the trucks we need to cover that area.”

Plans are to essentially duplicate the facilities at the Oakalla VFD with a few changes, and the meeting will be held at that building to give attendees a good vision of the future fire department.

“We want to have the town hall meeting to let everybody know what is happening and get all the information out there,” Weeks said. “We are looking to get the public's input and suggestions of changes.”

The committee will hear all suggestions and take down notes, and hope to come away with a plan for a fire department which will effectively and transparently serve the residents of the area it covers.

“We want to do this so the community feels informed and knows where their tax dollars are going,” Weeks said.

The Town Hall meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10. All community members are welcome to attend. Oakalla VFD is located at 29111 Farm-to-Market 963, Oakalla.
