While the temperatures are screaming it’s still summertime take a quick drive around the BHS Campus and you will be able to spot fall all around. At just about anytime from early morning to late evening you can find a group of Bulldogs or Lady Dawgs preparing for their upcoming season, and some of those have already begun to play.

Volleyball

The three Lady Bulldog volleyball teams have seen lots of court time already including their official season openers last Tuesday in Marble Falls. All three teams took to the court versus the Lady Mustangs and two groups in green brought home victories.

Burnet’s freshman squad kicked things off with a two set win. The JV Lady Dawgs won their first set, but unfortunately dropped the next two to their opponent.

The varsity girls took a little time to get their feet under them but they eventually got the job done in four sets, winning three-straight after dropping the opener, 25-12.

Varsity coach, Crystal Shipley, who just took over the team this year was proud of how her girls responded after a tough loss in the first set out.

“These girls overcame adversity in the first match of the season. It took some major guts to fight back,” said Shipley.

The varsity Lady Dawgs are suiting up 11 players for the 2019 season. Sven of those have varsity experience even though the majority of the team are just sophomores.

Shipley will put two seniors on the court, Burnet’s returning libero, Inez Rayas, and Melissa Perez who just joined the group this year.

The Lady Dawgs have three juniors on the team in Kyli Davis, Karissa Killebrew, and Teagan Tappe.

The remainder of the girls are all sophomores, including Rylee Hernandez, Jaycee Morris, Katelynn Massey, Caty Crow, Kirstyn Reyes, and Kayla Gillaspie.

Last weekend the varsity team played at the Tex-Fest tournament, this weekend they will see more tourney play in Glen Rose.

You can catch all three teams at home on Tuesday, Aug. 20 when they host Pflugerville.

Football

The Bulldog football team wrapped up their first full week of practice on Saturday morning with some intersquad scrimmage play. The freshman appear to have about 35 kids suiting up and there were some bright spots on both sides of the ball.

The varsity and JV mixed and took to the field next.

Burnet will have two more scrimmages to work out the kinks and tune-up their skills before hitting the road for their opener against Wimberley on Friday, Aug. 30. Last year the Texans managed to slip away at the end of the game defeating Burnet 32-25.

Following that game the Dawgs will host three-straight at home kicking things off against Marble Falls in week two, Lockhart in week three, and Manor New Tech in week four.

Their final pre-district game will be played on the road at Sonora.

District will kickoff in Lampasas on Sept. 11. The rest of district will play out with Burnet hosting Canyon Lake, at Liberty Hill, hosting Fredericksburg, and at Taylor for the final 14-4A game on Nov. 8.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading the Burnet Bulletin.
