All-Tournament Honors

Over the holiday break four Burnet basketball athletes were named to All Tournament teams. On the girls side Marissa Escamilla (23) and Emma Lewis (11) were honored with selections for their contributions to the Lady Dawgs during the BTX Christmas Classic. For the boys Burnet seniors Caelin Graves (11) and Drew Kiser (3) earned some new hardware with All Tournament selections from the Fredericksburg Invitational. Congratulations to all four players.

Continued success for the varsity Bulldogs

The varsity Bulldog basketball team has had a very successful run as of late and last week they added two more victories to the win column. The Dawgs defeated the St. Andrews Crusaders on Tuesday night in Burnet, 68-41; and opened district play on Friday with a 79-35 road win over the Ducks. Burnet was impressive right out of the gate on Tuesday night. As a team they knocked down 19 points in the first and combined for five three pointers. Caelin Graves and Drew Kiser each hit two from outside the arc and Ryan Robertson added another. Burnet carried a 19-10 lead into the second. The Bulldogs also had a good run in the second. They used buckets by Graves, Kiser, Kyle Cavender, and Carlos Herrera to add up 16 while holding the Crusaders to just five for a 35-15 lead at the break. Burnet had their best offensive output in the third period. The Dawgs scored 26 points and did a good job at the foul line making seven of nine attempts.

Lady Dawgs open district 1-1

The varsity Lady Bulldogs opened district play last Tuesday night against highly touted Liberty Hill in Burnet. The Lady Panthers are ranked as high as second in state and even have a top 25 national ranking.

Despite all that Burnet went into the game with an early confidence and played very well in the first quarter building an 8-2 lead with just under three minutes remaining in first period. Liberty Hill took their first lead with under a minute remaining in the opener and the quarter ended in the Lady Panthers favor, 13-10.

In the second period Liberty Hill built a much bigger lead until back-to-back three pointers by Marissa Escamilla and Emma Lewis helped to close the gap. The Lady Panthers eventually worked themselves into a 32-21 halftime advantage with several late free-throws.

Girls All Region

Senior Lady Bulldog Afabiana Brooks and sophomore Lady Bulldog Marissa Escamilla were both named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Girls’ All Region Class 4A team. “These individual honors are a direct reflection of the Lady Dawgs success this season. Congratulate these young ladies on their individual awards when you see them,” said head girls’ coach Doug Messer.

All District honors eight Lady Dawgs

Eight Lady Bulldogs were recently honored with selections to the 25-4A All District List.

Burnet's players turned in top performances, which led to a successful 2015-2016 season.

Burnet collected two superlative awards with senior Shaylah Hullum being named a co-defensive player of the year; and sophomore Marissa Escamilla being listed as the district’s Newcomer of the year. Both girls were also named to the first team all district list.

Two other senior ladies earned first team honors with their relentless style of play. Those players are Katelyn Pool and Afabiana Brooks.

Second team honors went to senior Miranda Weeks and junior Reagan Giesenschlag.

Seniors Ashley Bernal and Emma Skinner were each named to the honorable mention list.
