Library expands children’s services

Herman Brown Free Library has expanded its children’s services to include new technology aimed at literacy for its youngest patrons.

The library now offers in-house check out of tablets with the award-winning online software ABCmouse. The high-quality software is aimed at children, ages 1-7.  It is a comprehensive and fun early learning website covering reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, art and music. The site is child-safe, with no advertising or links to other websites. Best of all, children love it.

“The ABCmouse software ties nicely into another successful early literacy program we began last year, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten,” said Rebecca Noah, youth services librarian. “1000 Books Before Kindergarten promotes reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers and encourages parent and child bonding through the reading goal of 1,000 books before a child enrolls in school.”

BCISD plans teacher pay raise

BY CHRISTI BERTELSON/BURNET BULLETIN

Teachers and staff members will enjoy more than just reconnecting with their students when they return to the classrooms for the 2016-2017 school year.

That's because, as discussed in a June 2015 budgeting session, they will be due a pay increase coinciding with the start of the fall semester, so long as the proposed measure nets final approval from the BCISD Board of Trustees next Monday, March 28.

“Because the Legislature approves the state budget for two years, we were able during our budget workshops last year to provide a preview to the board of compensation plans for the 2016-17 school year,” said Keith McBurnett, BCISD Superintendent.

During their budgeting workshop on Monday, March 7, school board members announced that they had achieved a balanced budget, which included pay raises for the third time since Superintendent McBurnett took office.

Blizzard leaves in July

by Alexandria Randolph

A Burnet CISD school administrator confirmed Thursday that he will be leaving the district to take another position.
Director of Maintenance and Facilities Jerry Blizzard, who took his position with Burnet CISD in August 2012, said he will be leaving the district to work in Weatherford ISD.
“I have taken a new position with Weatherford ISD as the Executive Director of Facilities and will be leaving Burnet CISD at the end of July,” Blizzard said in an email Thursday morning. “This is a good opportunity for me and the move will put us closer to our family.”
Blizzard has a back ground in private energy consulting.

For more on the story, see Wednesday’s Burnet Bulletin.
