A crowd of 94 children and 50 adults

A crowd of 94 children and 50 adults on June 3 attend the first Bertram Library Summer Reading Program, "Captain Cartoon His Mighty Magic Marker." On June 10, the program will be ustin Reptiles. The free series will be held each Thursday in June at 10:30 a.m. at Joann Cole Mittee Memorial Library, 140 South Gabriel Street in Bertram, 512-355-2113.

Rains slacken as summer activities begin in Bertram

Rain has been the main topic of conversation throughout the area for the last month. I had a total of 11.95 inches at my place on 1174 North, and the Taylors, just off 1174 South had 17.2 inches. While we are all happy for this bounteous rainfall, it also brings its problems. Farmers can’t work their fields and all our gardens have various complications. As usual, it’s “feast or famine”! At least we can say that, locally, our drought has improved.

Children’s librarian

Children’s librarian Bridget Hartje shows off a $1,000 grant from Dollar General. The money will be used to fund the library’s Summer Reading Program which runs each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from June 4–25.

“Buddy Bench”

Bertram Elementary students sit on their new “Buddy Bench” located in the pavilion. The bench was recently donated by Burnet’s Epsilon Pi Sorority to encourage kindness, acceptance, fun and friendship on every school’s playground. Looking on are sorority members and elementary school staff members.

Bertram T Ball teams dubbed the “Bombers”

Bertram T Ball teams dubbed the “Bombers” and the “Pink Panthers” played each other in their last game of the season on Tuesday, May 12. Both teams played well, and it was obvious that they learned a lot this season. They celebrated after the game with a pizza party and all players received trophies.

R Bank grand opening, citywide garage sales ahead

R Bank is fully moved into its new location at 360 Hwy 29 East. It will celebrate its grand opening tomorrow, Thursday, April 30, from 3-6 p.m. with music, beverages and cake, as well as some barbecue provided by Hwy 29 BBQ. Join in for a fun afternoon!

Last chance coming up April 30 for seniors to apply for HLMGA 2015 scholarships

The deadline for Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association (HLMGA) scholarships is approaching. The HLMGA scholarships are for undergraduate students currently enrolled in a horticultural or agricultural degree programs or the graduating seniors from area High Schools who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree/ technical certification in the horticultural or agriculture sciences. Each scholarship awards a student $2,500

Kinder Roundup, CROP Walk highlight upcoming activities

Even though this school year is not over, the elementary is already preparing for next year. It is very important that they have a good idea of next year’s Pre-K and Kindergarten numbers. So, parents are encouraged to register their children at the Kinder Roundup on Monday, April 27, at 6 p.m. in the elementary library.
