Elnora Janet Arnold

Elnora Janet Boston Arnold died Sept. 11, 2014. She was born on Jan. 7, 1923, in Austin, Texas, the daughter of Hugh Bun Boston and Prudie Lee Whitley Boston. She was a lifetime member of both the Texas and National PTA organizations, and was very active in civic matters during her time living in Corpus Christi, Texas. Arnold was also an active member of the First Christian Church of Burnet as long as her health allowed. She was a servant leader in her home and community while she was able, and as her body succumbed to failing health, she ran her race through to the end with dignity, grace, and patience. She is survived by: her son, James Arnold of Alice, Texas; her daughter, Mary Arnold, of Burnet, Texas; sisters Shirley Jackson, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Ethel Lee Reynolds of Victoria, Texas; 10 grandchildren, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

J.L. Mathews

J.L. “Jeet” Mathews, 80, of Buchanan Dam, died Sept.7, 2014, after a short battle with cancer. A son of Harvey and Ethel (Fitzgerald) Mathews he was born on March 31, 1934, in San Saba County, the youngest of six children. He was raised and educated in Bangs, Texas. He married Barbara Vosburg on March 10, 1961. Mathews served in the United States Air Force. After his discharge, he lived and worked in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He was employed with Southwestern Public Service for 20 years. He then owned and operated Valley Hole Digging Service. After retiring, they moved near a lake in Texas because he loved fishing and wildlife and they stayed in the Highland Lakes area for 14 years. In addition to hunting and fishing, he refurbished jukeboxes, watched sports on TV and was always found supporting his daughter and grandchildren at their sporting events. They didn’t call him grandpa or granddaddy, but instead “Jeet” as he was known by all.

Roger Emmit Grill

Roger Emmit Grill, 66, of Burnet, died Sept. 4, 2014. He was born Jan. 23, 1948, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Bernard Grill and Isabelle Mable Carle Grill. He grew up and spent his youth in Little Canada, Minnesota. He served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the First Air Cavalry Division, in which he served in LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol.) Among other decorations, he was awarded The Purple Heart, the Air Medal, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star. After returning home in 1970, he attended college. For the past several years, he resided in Burnet, where he attended Epiphany Episcopal Church and volunteered at LaCare Food Bank. On Jan. 13, 2011, he married Rebecca Parker Neumann and she survives. Grill was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. A graveside service with military honors and interment took place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Jon Harold Kirk

Jon Harold Kirk, 76, of Burnet, died Sept. 12, 2014. He was born on April 28, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Harold and Elsa Arbini Kirk. Surviving Kirk are: his wife of 53 years, Jane; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jon Kirk, of Irving, Texas, and Jeff and Debra Kirk, of Dublin, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Bryce Kirk and Bailey Kirk. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Eileen Ogle. No services are planned at this time, according to Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet. Doug Allen Merritt

Doug Allen Merritt, 56, passed away on Sept. 3, 2014. He was a long-time resident of Bertram, Texas. Merritt served his country in the United States Navy. He is survived by: his father, Dale R. Merritt; stepmother, Harriet Merritt; brothers and sisters, Dale E. Merritt, Daniel L. Merritt, Denise E. Merritt, Darwin R. Merritt, David C. Merritt, Diana L. Merritt-Salveggio and Delisa Ray. He is preceded in death by his mother, Edna Irene Merritt.
