There have been a number of activities happening in Burnet in the sports world. The volleyball program has more than a dozen games tallied this season, tennis has had a couple of opportunities to shine on the courts and football officially kicked off their campaign this week.

Volleyball

The Lady Bulldog volleyball teams recently hosted a dual meet with Lampasas and Johnson City. Freshman and JV each won both games, while the varsity girls went 1-1, beating Lampasas and falling to Johnson City.

On Saturday, Aug. 22 the Lady Dawgs hosted another dual meet this time welcoming Llano and Thrall to town. The freshman and JV teams again picked up two wins each, while the varsity finished 1-1 with a win over Llano and a loss to Thrall. Burnet beat Llano 25-7, 25-5, 25-18, before falling to Thrall 15-25, 22-25, and 19-25.

“All of our girls are working hard and getting better each week. They are learning to play together and how to improve each time they step on the court,” said head coach Crystal Shipley.

The volleyball teams played Wimberley and Fredericksburg last week. They hosted Llano yesterday and will be on the road this Friday at Brownwood. District play begins Sept. 22.

Tennis

The Bulldog tennis team traveled to Lampasas on Friday night.

“On court temperatures were well over 100 degrees when we began play,” said coach Nathan Redman. “We battled the heat as much as we did our opponents.”

In all 10 matches were played between the Bulldogs and Badgers. Will Gregg, Zaida Freeman and Tatum Salinas claimed singles victories for Burnet.

“There were signs of improvement even in losses and the match experience will provide some insight into areas that further improvements are needed,” said Redman.

The tennis team will be in action this Friday against Boerne High School.

Football

Sub-varsity football played their first games of the season on Thursday at Jarrell. The freshman squad opened things up for the Bulldog with a 28-0 victory. No further game information was available.

The JV team defeated Jarrell, 44-6.

Jarrell scored first on a 31-yard reception to take a 6-0 lead early in the first. The Bulldogs answered with an onslaught of first period scores including an 80-yard touchdown pass from Tanner O’Hair to Ayden Dale, a Jose Rodriguez 11-yard run, and a Rodriguez 60-yard run. O’Hair added one first quarter two-point conversion and Rodriguez posted another.

Burnet scored twice more before the half. Dale crossed the goal line on a 28-yar run, and Garrett Buster added another rushing score from 30-yards out. A connection between O’Hair and Cooper Weeks added two on the conversion.

No scoring was added in the third, but the Dawgs closed out the game in the fourth with an Evan Reeves two-yard TD followed by an O’Hair conversion bringing the final to 44-6.

The offensive line dominated the game for Burnet; the line consisted of Jose Lopez, William Randles, Cameron Stires, Knox Ward, Pedro Guerrero, and Dalton Orrison. These guys opened large lanes for Rodriguez, Buster, and O’Hair.

The defense was led by the play of Coyt Barrow, Kurt Kassner, O’Hair and James Glaspy. Fumble recoveries were secured by Glaspy, O’Hair and Grayson Blair.

The JV Dawgs will host Gonzales this Thursday.
