Bulldogs split holiday games

The Bulldog basketball teams played two games over the holiday break traveling to Llano on Tuesday, Dec. 29 and hosting Robinson on New Year’s Day.

The varsity and JV teams each split their contests, with the varsity defeating Llano and losing to the Rockets, while the JV lost to the Jackets and defeated Robinson.

Junior Varsity

The JV Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker in Llano on Tuesday, 36-35. The Jackets outscored Burnet 12-10 in the final period to claim victory. Diego Chavira and Lane Murphy each scored 13 points in the contest.

On Friday the JV Dawgs defeated Robinson, 47-43. Murphy was Burnet’s leading scorer with 14 points. He made four three-pointers in the contest. Jacob Atkinson was next on the list with 11, followed by Vance Pennington, nine; Lewis, five; Cooper Weeks, four; Chavira, two; and Maynard, two.

Varsity

Burnet’s first game during the break was at Llano on Tuesday. The Bulldogs trailed the Jackets, 29-27 at the break but returned to the court in the third and played exceptionally well. Burnet shot fantastic and played smothering defense while outscoring the Jackets 20-5 in the third to take a 47-34 lead into the final period. Llano fought back taking the fourth 14-13 but the Dawgs earned the victory, 60-48.

Joseph Fitzsimmons was the leading scorer with 16 points. He made two three-pointers and was 10 of 12 from the free throw line. Strat Roy was next on the chart with 14 points, followed by Joseph Parker, 12; Lawson Lucky, eight; Grayson Blair, four; Grant Jones, three; Gunner Blair, two; and Hudson Bennett, one.

On Friday the Dawgs hosted a talented Robinson team and Burnet fell short, 60-38. Roy led the Dawgs with 21 points. He was followed by Fitzsimmons, seven; Lucky, four; Jones, three; Bennett, two; and Grayson Blair, one.

The Dawgs played their final non-district game at Gatesville on Tuesday. They will be open this Friday followed by the 19-4A tip-off on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at home versus Salado. The Bulldogs will face Salado, Taylor, Lake Belton, Jarrell and Gateway in district play.
