A short-term “mid-wife crisis” has come to an end at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center — Marble Falls.

Hospital officials announced last week that on Tuesday, Sept. 8, labor and delivery services would resume at the facility, reversing course from a decision made earlier this year and “strengthening our commitment to patients and their families.”

“For women and expectant mothers, this means convenient access to safe, quality care, peace of mind and a personalized experience in nurturing environment close to home,” the hospital announced.

Back in June, Baylor Scott & White Health announced they would cease providing labor and delivery services at the medical center in Marble Falls by the end of July and the labor and delivery (L&D) units at the Lakeway and Marble Falls medical centers would be combined into a single unit in Lakeway in order to provide “moms-to-be enhanced quality care by shifting our focus to a single nurturing location.”

At the time, the hospital had said the move would allow Marble Falls to expand its medical and surgical services — including orthopedics, ophthalmology and endocrinology.

Hospital officials then sent out a letter or email to patients telling them they were changing course on Wednesday, July 29.

“After additional thoughtful consideration, we are pleased to share that Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Marble Falls has made the decision to maintain its labor & delivery (L&D) services,” the letter read. “Over the next several days, we will be working with staff to re-open the L&D unit and anticipate families can start scheduling deliveries at Marble Falls in the near future.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused — and we want you to know that when the time comes, our labor and delivery team will be here to provide you with a birth experience as individual as the new person on the way.” Baylor Scott & White Mar

“At Baylor Scott & White, we are honored to have worked with so many families over the years, and it is our priority to exceed our patients’ expectations for safe, quality care when they choose to deliver at our facilities — even during this unprecedented time,” the hospital said in its statement. “We appreciate the continued dedication of our employees and physicians to providing exceptional patient care, and we are thankful for the trust our patients place in us every day.”

BSW officials said OB/GYN teams across the Hill Country and in communities west of Austin “will collaborate to continue to provide quality OB/GYN services for women at both Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Lakeway and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Marble Falls.”

“This includes working together with patients to determine the best site of care for deliveries and surgeries,” the letter said. “For example, Marble Falls patients may have the option to undergo gynecologic procedures with the minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgical technology at Lakeway.”
