Former Hill Country Builders Association, Texas Association of Builders and National Association of Home Builders president Granger MacDonald passed away Wednesday, June 17, at his home in Kerrville at the age of 65, HCBA executive director Kris Pelky announced Thursday.

“Granger MacDonald led our association and the housing industry through challenging times on the local (HCBA), state (TAB) and national (NAHB) level,” Pelkey said.

“He had an exceptional reputation and experience from making and keeping housing affordability attainable for all Texans. He helped increase the availability of acquisition, development, and construction loans through community banks across Texas. He has proven his dynamic leadership over the years with many lasting contributions and made the Hill Country Builders Association what it is today. His wisdom, leadership will be sorely missed. His dedication and commitment to our industry and federation was extraordinary and an inspiration to all who met him.

“Granger MacDonald’s dedication and hard work has created a foundation that will remain strong for years to come in the housing industry. Granger never hesitated to take on any challenges and has proven an inspiration and brick layer for others who had worked with him.”

Dean Mon, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder and developer from Shrewsbury, N.J., said,

“We deeply mourn the passing of our great friend, Granger MacDonald. Granger was an icon in the housing industry and led our industry at the local, state and national levels. During his year as chairman in 2017, he was at the forefront in the fight to address the growing housing affordability crisis in America.

“During the past four decades, he provided affordable housing for Texas communities most in need in the state’s rural and small metro areas. Granger was devoted to the industry and our Federation, but most importantly, he helped so many builders over the years and was a friend and mentor to many. He will be greatly missed.”

“Granger devoted his life to helping people meet the basic need for shelter,” added NAHB CEO Jerry Howard. “There could be no more worthy cause. I lost a brother today.”

In November 2019, MacDonald was inducted into the Texas Housing Hall of Honor.

As CEO of MacDonald Companies — group of companies specializing in developing, building, and managing multifamily neighborhoods across Texas — MacDonald, a secondgeneratoin builder, oversaw the completion of 5,700 units throughout 48 communities in 25 Texas cities.

His son, Justin MacDonald, serves as president and chief financial officer.

Funeral and memorial arrangements for MacDonald will be published at a future date.
