Jesse James “Boggs” Chaney, 83, of Bertram, Texas, dies on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at his home surrounded by family under Kindred Hospice Care.

A funeral is to be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Bertram Church of Christ. Burial to follow at Bear Creek Cemetery.

Jesse was born on June 9, 1937 in Breckenridge, Texas to Eli Washington and Anna Laura Hall Chaney. He grew up in Breckenridge and attended schools there. Jesse loved sports and was born with a guitar in his hands. He played high school football for the Buckaroos from 1951-1954 and won state 3 out of those 4 years. He received a scholarship to play at West Texas College and received his Associates degree before joining the U. S. Army. While serving in the Army, he was assigned to the police division as a sentry dog trainer, sharpshooter, earning his Marksman badge all while stationed in Great Lakes, Il. While there he also met and married the love of his life, Judy Chaney on November 5, 1960.

Later they moved to Wichita Falls where he worked for the Texas Highway Department as an engineer in road construction where he retired after 20 years of service. They settled in Bertram, Texas, enjoying such hobbies as gardening, cooking, fishing, camping, and boating. He also loved the Dallas Cowboys, playing guitar and loved his smoker.

He is preceded in death by his wife Judy Chaney who passed away last October; grandson, Alvin Whiteacre; father, Eli Washington Chaney; mother, Anna Laura Hall Chaney, as well as twelve brothers and six sisters.

Jesse is survived by his daughters, Catherine Elizabeth Chaney Bogart and her husband Steve Bogart and Cynthia Ann Chaney Whiteacre and her husband Carl Seals; grandchildren, Christen Bogart, Kyle Bogart, Ashely Whiteacre, Jimmy Russell, and Allen Henderson; great grandchildren, Kasche Russell, Jesse Henderson, and Alexis Russell.

Arrangements under the care of Jenkins Funeral Home, Burnet, Texas.
