It was a fantastic day for Burnet’s Green Wave last Friday as they competed at the District 17-5A swim meet in Georgetown. Burnet has qualified six athletes for the upcoming Regional meet including five swimmer and one diver.

Burnet’s head coach Stephanie Pegues was extremely pleased with her swimmers performances.

“I can’t even begin to express all the joy and excitement from the district meet,” said Pegues. “The whole team exceeded my expectations and I’m beyond proud of all their accomplishments.”

Coach Pegues went on to say, “We are in a tough and fast district but were right in the mix and had so many outstanding performances. We placed seventh overall and fought hard to the wall on every finish. We had personal bests from the entire team.”

The Dawgs competed in the 17-5A district which hosts Georgetown, Eastview, Gateway Prep, Leander, Rouse, Glen, Cedar park, Liberty Hill and Marble Falls.

The Green Wave set two new school records at the event and qualified five swimmers for regionals. Burnet diver, Zoe Nicholl, will join them after qualifying last week in the diving portion of the district event.

Burnet sophomore Isabel Lunsford had a career day at the district meet. Lunsford quailed for Regionals in three events and she set two new school record in the process. Lunsford placed third in the girls 200 free with a 2:02.05 which earned her a spot at regionals and a new school record. She also placed third in the girls 100 free for a spot in that race at regionals.

Lunsford combined talents with Kyla Kleen, Lydia Billock, and Julianna La Joie for a school record in the girls 200 freestyle relay. The Burnet swimmers set the record with a 1:50.96.

The girls 400 freestyle relay team of Lunsford, Jacey Huston, Kyla Kleen, and Julianna La Joie placed fourth overall earning a ticket to regionals.

Zoe Nicholl will join the girls at regionals in the girls one-meter diving competition.

On the boys side Burnet has one swimmer that will be moving on to Regionals. Green Wave senior, Maczimus placed fourth in the boys 100 freestyle event to earn his ticket.

The Bulldogs also had several near misses when it comes to school records. The boys 200 yard medley relay team of Hayden Brown, Ryan Behrens, Aidan Zollitsch, and Jordan Messer missed breaking the record that has stood since 1999 by .10 seconds.

The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Griego, Behrens, Brown, and Messer finished one second off the school record that has been in place since 2006.

Griego, Behrens, Brown, and Messer were only a half-second away from breaking the school record in the boys 400 freestyle relay. That record has stood since 1999.
