Sticking to sports

It’s times like these that I’m even more thankful that my job in media is to strictly cover sports. It seems like all you ever see in the news anymore is negative. Between COVID and politics most of the time we just change the channel to something a little less depressing. Speaking of that have you watched Cobra Kai? It’s just a cheesy Netflix series but if you enjoyed the Karate Kid in the 80’s you might actually enjoy it. There are three seasons currently available so it could at least fill a weekend or two.

There are plenty of positive things to talk about in the Burnet sports world. I’ll start with girls basketball. The three Burnet teams opened district play on Tuesday and all three easily defeated their competition. The freshman got things started with a 40-21 win over Jarrell; that moved their overall record to 11-1, 1-0 in district.

The JV girls followed that with a 52-25 district opener win. They are currently 7-5 on the year, 1-0 in district.

The varsity girls ended the night with a big 51-28 win in their 19-4A opener versus Jarrell. Burnet’s varsity is 14-1 on the season, and now 1-0 in district.

All three teams enjoyed a bye on Friday and returned to district play on Tuesday in Salado. They will return to Bulldog Gym this Friday hosting Taylor.

The boys basketball teams opened district play on Friday versus Gateway. Burnet won two of the three contests with the JV winning, 45-37; varsity earning a 61-41 win; and the freshman coming up just short, 30-28. The Bulldogs hosted Salado on Tuesday and will be on the road Friday at Taylor.

It’s officially soccer season in Burnet and all of the Lady Dawg and Bulldog teams are eager to get back to the field after their 2020 seasons were cut short. Both varsity teams were heading to the playoffs last year, the boys for the first time in Burnet program history, when they received word it was all cancelled.

Both groups played in tournaments over the weekend. The Lady Dawgs earned two shutout wins in a row on their home field. They defeated Manor New Tech 3-0 and also beat Bandera 5-0. A shoutout to Lady Bulldog senior, Caty Crow, who posted all five goals versus Bandera. She had a little help from her friends Phebe Musasa, Reagan Shipley, and Kaycie Banton who all earned assists.

It’s about to get crazy in the sports world. In January you can find Burnet athletes participating in basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, golf, tennis, powerlifting, swimming, and track. We will do our best to bring you all the good news surrounding each of these events.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading the Burnet Bulletin.
