The Burnet high school and middle school cross country teams began their 2020 seasons on Saturday with races in Florence. It was an extremely hot meet for the Dawgs but that didn’t stop several runners from performing their very best.

Hudson Bennett, returning to the sport after a late season injury sidelined him last year, shattered the meet record by running a 16:03. That mark was 53-seconds faster than his time at Florence last year.

Andy Urista also ran an impressive time of 17:47 for eighth place.

The boys finished third overall behind McGregor and Gatesville. The girls finished in fifth place led by Rose Flores who posted a 13:32 for a 13 place individual finish.

“After having to wait an hour between the last high school race and the first middle school race the heat index rose to over 100 degrees, but our middle school kids showed a great deal of toughness and everyone of them finished the race. We are really proud of their efforts,” said coach Roy Kiser.

Victor Aviles ran a strategically smart race and won the boys two mile with a time of 11:55. On the girls’ side Halle Maxwell finished eighth overall with an impressive time of 15:22.

This Saturday the high school teams will run in San Antonio at the FEAST Patriot Invitational and the middle school teams are off.
