Citizens of Note: Mary Augusta (Ligon) Hampton

The Burnet County Historical Commission will honor seven individuals for their contributions to Burnet County, at a Citizens of Note reception Tuesday, July 2.

In the weeks leading up to the reception, the Burnet Bulletin will publish the biography of each recipient, written by family members and acquaintances of the honorees.

The community is invited to the 2019 Citizens of Note reception to recognize these exceptional individuals at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2 at the Burnet County AgriLife Extension Office, 607 North Vandeveer, Burnet.

Mary Augusta (Ligon) Hampton

Mary Augusta Ligon was born Jan. 7, 1890 in Fayette County, Texas, to Nannie (Kennedy) Ligon and William Henry Ligon Jr. The family moved to Burnet, Texas where her father was involved in farming and was the proprietor of a butcher shop in the town of Burnet.

Burnet County historian Darrell Debo remembered

Burnet County is mourning the loss of well-known historian and community figure Darrell Debo, who passed away Sunday, April 21.

Debo was born on Sept. 15, 1931, a member of one of Burnet County’s pioneer families. He grew up to graduate as valedictorian of Burnet High School Class of 1948 and continued his education at Texas Christian University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Divinity. Debo is not only remembered as a historian, but as an experienced pianist, journalist, election judge, and preacher, serving churches in Fredonia, Bertram, Kingsland, and Burnet, officiating over 600 funerals and caring for numerous individuals.
