Hudgins named Academic All-State

Burnet senior, Zac Hudgins, was recently named to the 2018 Second Team Academic All-State team. Hudgins received this honor for the work he put into his senior campaign not only on the field as a Bulldog offensive lineman, but also in the classroom as a student athlete. The Texas High School Coaches Association takes many things into consideration including GPA, SAT/ACT scores and class rank when making their selections. Congratulation to Zac on this prestigious award.

Good openers for sub-varsity

The JV and freshman Bulldogs opened their 2016 football season on Thursday with games in Austin against Reagan. No extended stats were available for the freshman game but it was known that Burnet shutdown and shutout their opponent, 24-0.

In the JV game Austin Reagan scored in the first quarter on an 11-yard run. They took an 8-0 lead after successfully cashing in a two-point conversion.

Burnet answered in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Ryan Jackson, but the conversion failed leaving the Dawgs trailing, 8-6.

The second half produced no scoring by either team. A late Burnet drive had team green moving quickly down the field but a questionable penalty put them in a big hole and they were unable to score. The game ended in Reagan’s favor, 8-6.

Despite the outcome it was a well fought battle by the JV. Many expect good things from this team moving into the season.

Dawgs tested by Lions in first scrimmage

The Burnet Bulldog football teams traveled to Brownwood on Friday to finally test themselves against someone other than their own teammates. What awaited was a tough pop-quiz of a team full of Lion pride. If touchdowns were all that mattered to you, then the Lions got the edge on all three Burnet teams, but there’s a lot more to learn at a scrimmage than endzone celebrations.

It was actually a good look for both squads on every level.

The JV and freshman teams got off to a later start than expected, but once the bad weather cleared out it was go time. Fans quickly found out that running back Donavan Seiley can take a licking and keep on ticking and that freshman Hunter King can rattle your jaw.

There was plenty of success, but weak areas were also exposed and that’s what scrimmages are for.
