For the past six years, one of the most anticipated events in the community has been making a difference for the town's graduating seniors by providing nights of entertainment, fellowship, and fun for all of its guests.

The Suzanne Johnson Scholarship Endowment Fundraiser is returning for one final hoorah on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Hidden River Ranch in Lampasas. The event has captured the hearts of the entire community since 2012 after it was developed to honor the memory of Suzanne Johnson, late wife of First State Bank of Burnet President Cary Johnson.

Fundraiser generates over $160,000 for local scholarships

Cary Johnson, surrounded by mariachis and his grandchildren, Lane, Whitney, and Wesley Whitehead, took a moment to relax during the fiesta at the Suzanne Johnson Scholarship Endowment Fundraiser held last weekend at the Collins Rustic Ranch. The endowment was created in affiliation with the Hill Country Community Foundation in order to award annual scholarships in her memory to Burnet High School graduates.

The 6th Annual Suzanne Johnson Scholarship Endowment Fundraiser this last weekend had yet another big year, officials said – garnering approximately $165,000.

Cary Johnson, founder of the endowment fund and President of First State Bank of Burnet, said that “We could have never done this without the volunteers from First State Bank or without the help from our friends and family; and of course the help from our loving community.”

Over $300,000 total in scholarships has been awarded by the Foundation in the last nine years, Johnson said.

As for the Suzanne Johnson Endowment Fund, Johnson said “it is not our intention to ever spend it. It's a perpetual endowment. If we can get it up to a million we'll earn $50,000 a year in perpetuity.”

This money could go to scholarships for local students each year for countless years.
