A packed room cheered heartily when Burnet Police Chief Paul Nelson was named the Thomas C. Ferguson Outstanding Citizen of the Year at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet Saturday, Feb. 8, but the biggest ovation of the night came for one of his officers, who died in the line of duty last year.

BPD K-9 handler Jose Humberto Meza, who died of a heart attack after a training session on Dec. 20, 2019, was named the recipient of the Wallace Riddell Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. His widow, Cristina, was present to accept the award on his behalf from Ann Riddell and Vonnie Fox.
