The community will start to see new faces in new places at Highland Lakes Publishing, as company leaders have hired and promoted personnel to handle the growing needs in providing coverage for the area in Burnet Bulletin and The Highlander.

In our Bulletin office, Raymond V. Whelan has joined the team as a staff writer for the Bulletin. Whelan joined the staff in January of this year.

“He has a wealth of experience in news media and newspapers,” Publisher and Editor Jeff Shabram said.

Whelan covers Burnet County Commissioners Court, which hold meetings in Burnet in the courthouse, as well as Burnet community news and features.

In year's past, he covered the commissioner's court for another area news platform, so he is no stranger to the news value, protocols and intricacies of county government.

Not only is Whelan a seasoned journalist, but a scriptwriter whose past work has been featured at an Austin festival.

Mark Goodson has returned to the community in the north end of the county and has accepted the position as sports writer for The Highlander. He comes to us from the Gatesville Messenger where he was their sports editor.

Prior to his time with the Messenger, Goodson covered Marble Falls sports for The Highlander from 2012 to 2017.

“I am pleased to welcome back Mark Goodson to our team,” Shabram said. “He is a very experienced sports reporter working with a number of Texas newspapers including the Dallas MorningNews and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.”

Goodson will be returning to The Highlander as the sports staff writer beginning April 4.

Finally, Highland Lakes Publishing is pleased to announce the promotion of Connie Swinney to Associate Editor. She joined The Highlander in 2018 as a staff writer.

“Connie has extensive experience in radio, television and online media as well as newspapers,” Shabram said. “Her diverse and professional experience greatly adds to the quality of our editorial newspaper products and continues to shine through within our various special publications.

“Along with her current news beats – which includes law enforcement, courts and spot news – Connie will be responsible for review and editing of our special sections and magazines, along with providing guidance on editorial and special projects assignments,” he added.

Highland Lakes Publishing credits the new announcements – with more to come – to the response from the community which supports their local newspapers.

“These positive changes reflect the growing population, readership and advertising support that has contributed to the success of the newspapers of record for communities throughout Burnet County,” Shabram said.
