“Birds of the Big Bend and Davis Mountains” will be presented to members and guests of the Highland Lakes Birding and Wildflower Society (HLBWS) on February 3, 2022. Presenter Mike Petrick states that he will provide “an unscientific and sometimes humorous look at some of the birds seen in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains areas.” The online monthly meeting will start at 10:00 a.m. and the presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Visiting Big Bend and the Davis Mountains is a “must” for avid bird watchers. The ecological diversity of far west Texas provides habitat for about 450 resident and migratory species of birds, including a mix of eastern, western, Mexican and Rocky Mountains species. Many of these birds are rare and found almost exclusively in that region of Tex as. Mr. Petrick will share images of, and stories about, the species he has photographed there and what it took to capture those images.

Mike Petrick is a native of Burnet County, having grown up hunting, fishing and camping in the woods around Burnet and Lake Buchanan. He graduated from Burnet High School in 1960. Mr. Petrick became a teacher and coach. The last 8 years of his 38-year career were spent teaching outdoor education in Lewisville ISD. Mr. Petrick became a Texas Master Naturalist after retiring from public education. He now volunteers as a guide at the Heard Refuge in McKinney, the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area, and the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge near Sherman.
