Sixty-three high school teams brought their best barbecue to Llano this past weekend, competing for the right to be known as the Kings and Queens of the ‘Cue at the High School BBQ Inc. state championships.

When the smoke cleared Saturday, April 24, at the John L. Kuykendall Event Center, two teams were left standing as state’s top squads. One was the Smoking Eagles of Atascosita High School, while the other was the Bulldog FFA BBQ team from Burnet High School — one of four teams from BHS that were competing in the contest.

The two teams were named co-grand champions as a tabulation and review of scores determined an error in scoring had taken place. Each will receive the scholarships, trophies and recognition that comes from being crowned best of the best at the state meet.

The Bulldog FFA BBQ team of Greyson Barnett, Hayden Henry, Adrian Lopez and Kori Gilliland had come into the state meet fresh off a March 27 win at the Muenster qualifier. Momentum held with the squad as they churned out top-notch dishes in ribs, chicken, brisket, beans and dessert.

The only other Burnet team to finish in the top 30 was the Burnet FFA BBQ team of Tyler Patterson, Kendrick Castillo, Jordon Erickson and Braelynn Summers, who ended the day in 26th place.
