A Kingsland man has died July 15 after apparently drowning, during a fishing outing with his grandson in Sunrise Beach on Lake LBJ, officials said.

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) report, David Wells, 66, could not be revived after a period of time, despite attempts by boaters who arrived at the scene and emergency personnel.

He “entered the water to clean debris off the fish finder and began struggling to swim,” said TPWD Capt. Cody Hatfield in a statement.

“The juvenile threw him a type 4 life jacket, but the victim was unable to reach it and went under water,” he continued. “The juvenile put on a life jacket and jumped in to attempt to render aid.

“Both were in the water for over 20 minutes before a boat stopped to assist.”

The boaters performed CPR on the grandfather and called 911 as they transported them to shore. Emergency personnel on the scene also performed CPR but were unable to revive the elderly patient.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:01 p.m. by Llano County Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Brian Alexander.
