Burnet County commissioners on Tuesday, June 22, approved and added a supplement to the county’s transportation plan showing their preferred preliminary proposed alignment for a bridge crossing over the Colorado River to connect Ranch to Market Road 1431 with Texas 71 near Spicewood.

Commissioners are hoping to see a route locked in for the proposed bridge crossing as soon as possible so the county can take the next steps necessary to further the project.

This past January, the court approved adopted a non-binding 2020 Burnet County Transportation Plan developed by CAMPO which updates a similar one drafted a decade ago and focuses on future growth and mobility needs for the county.

The plan calls for development of not one, but two new bridge crossings over the Colorado River to help relieve traffic congestion and improve emergency response time.

On the east end of Burnet County, there would be a new, high-functioning arterial roadway — The Narrows extension — that would extend north from the intersection of County Road 406 and Texas 71, cross the river west of the Narrows Recreation Area and continue near County Road 344 to RM 1431 at Smithwick.
