Ready for spring

We are still two months away from the official first day of spring, but spring sports are now in full session in Bulldog country. With a lot of these activities being outside it would be nice if spring weather made an early appearance.

Last week I covered all sorts of events including a chilly soccer game on Friday night. The varsity soccer girls have been playing well and their coach, Kim Myhre, is pleased with their daily progress. That Friday night game was against an undefeated Hyde Park team and unfortunately Burnet fell just a little short, 2-1. The girls will go back to work this week and the varsity squad will host Wimberley on Friday. The Burnet girls first district game will be Tuesday, Jan. 26.

The boys soccer teams are just getting started. They played at the Canyon Lake tournament over the weekend and will also start district play right here in Burnet on Jan. 26.

The varsity boys basketball team dropped their Tuesday home district game to Salado but improved their 19-4A record to 2-1 with a big win over Taylor on Friday night. An interesting highlight from their Friday game at Taylor would have to be that the Dawgs shot perfect from the free-throw line making all their awarded charity shots. They will play their last game of the first round on Friday when they host Jarrell.

The varsity Lady Dawg basketball team is still setting them up and knocking them down. They continue to climb in the polls as well and are currently rankled in the top 10 in the MaxPrep poll. Burnet’s girls defeated Salado and Taylor last week moving their overall record to 16-1, 3-0 in district. They will begin round two this Friday at Jarrell.

The Green Wave honored their four seniors on Friday night just before their final home meet of the season. The Burnet swim program will certainly miss Maczimus Griego, Jordan Messer, Jacey Huston, and Ella Lawrie who all are four year varsity members of the team. District is next for Burnet’s divers and swimmers. District diving will be held in Burnet this Friday; district swimming next Friday in Georgetown.

Burnet’s powerlifters got their start last week in Lampasas. They will lift here on Thursday.

Before I close this week, here are a few other dates to jot down.

On Jan. 21 spring tennis will get their start with a dual meet versus San Saba.

The Lady Dawg softball team will play in their first scrimmage of the year on Jan. 30 at Lampasas. Regular season play for softball begins on Feb. 16 with Burnet hosting Brady.

Burnet golfers will start their spring schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at Llano.

The Bulldog baseball team will return to the diamonds on Feb. 8 in Llano.

Track season will open on Feb. 18 in Burnet with a running only event.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading the Burnet Bulletin.
