Hundreds attended the first “Jackson Street Jam” party June 17 in Burnet along the County Courthouse Square south side.

No rain threatened the outdoor event at any time. One cloud cover kept temperatures low.

Master of Ceremonies Damon Beierle (also the Burnet County Precinct 2 Commissioner) boomed exuberantly through a microphone as he thanked the crowd.

“This is exactly what we envisioned,” Beierle said. The event sponsored by the Burnet Community Coalition featured popular musician Gary P. Nunn, also The Western Playboys, which included lead guitarist Johnny Wyatt from the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

“He is the world’s oldest teenager,” said Alan Whitehead, the group lead vocalist.

Indeed, age mattered little to Wyatt as his fingers riffed through old favorites “Johnny B. Goode” popularized years ago by Chuck Berry, as well as “House of the Rising Sun” recorded years ago by Huddie Ledbetter, Bob Dylan, The Animals.

Also, Whitehead played a Telecaster guitar as he appeared on stage with his father Eddie Whitehead, who played bass, as well as drummer Steve Maynard.

Later during the jam, while Nunn rendered “Bandera Waltz,” Whitehead waltzed with his wife, Lisa Whitehead, also the Burnet County Justice of the Peace Precinct 2.

Also during the jam, the Hill Country Humane Society conducted a “Dog Walk,” featuring several canines from the society’s shelter near Lake Buchanan, out for a night on the town, milling around the square, where they hoped to be adopted soon by a friendly, permanent owner.

Local dignitaries helped walk more one than one dozen homeless dogs around the square, including Burnet County Chief Deputy Alan Trevino and Burnet City Councilman Philip Thurman.

The coalition plans to present two more jam sessions along the courthouse, one July 15 featuring Suede, another one Aug. 19, featuring Rick Trevino.
