The BHS cheerleading squad got the opportunity to compete at the UIL 4A-D1 State Championships last week. Before heading out to present their show to judges, Burnet’s cheer squad hosted an exhibition performance last Wednesday to give their fans and supporters a sneak peek at all the work they put in to make this a spectacular show.

On Friday morning the girls got their chance to perform at the 4A-D1 UIL Spirit State Championships at the Fort Worth Convention center. Burnet’s girls participated in the qualifying round where they put on a spirited routine that included a band chant dance, a crowd leading cheer, and the school fight song.

“Our girls did an amazing job and hit all their stunts effortlessly,” said Burnet’s head cheer coach Kristen Atwood. “They left it all on the mat with the best performance of the routine to date.”

Atwood added that she was extremely proud of her team after they fought through adversity during the week of the state performance.

“The girls had to battle adversity this week when an injury caused a last-minute change to an alternate team member. Spectators would have never known there was a change made just three days before the competition,” said Atwood.

The BHS cheer squad competed against 42 total teams in the 4A-D1 category. After the morning rounds of competition, and first cuts, Burnet’s girls were listed as having potential to make the finals. Sadly, following the afternoon round of routines the BHS Cheerleaders were eliminated from the finals.

“As their coaches we are extremely proud of their work ethic, heart, and showmanship,” said Coach Atwood speaking of herself and assistant coach Sheridan Gill.

Coach Kristen Atwood is in her first year leading the BHS cheer squad. She came to Burnet with seven years of cheer coaching experience and has led middle school teams to compete at UCA Regionals and qualified them for Nationals as well.

Tryouts for the 202324 season of cheerleading will be held during the month of March and Burnet’s new cheer squads will be announced at the beginning of spring break.
