Burnet is looking for a new municipal court judge, and at the same meeting – Tuesday, June 22 – city council members told City Manager David Vaughn go go ahead with a project to fix drainage problems in the Woodlands subdivision.

Judge Peggy Simon, who has presided over the municipal court since 2005, resigned effective June 30. Her regular, current two-year term as judge expired at the end of May, but state law allows for an extension; however, Simon’s resignation means the city is looking for a replacement.

City Secretary Kelly Dix was told to publish a request for qualifications from applicants. Dix, at kdix@cityofburnet.com, can supply details.

The council appointed Associate Judge Tamara Tinney to sit on the bench until a permanent judge can be named.

Simon, who attended the meeting, received a round of applause to thank her for her service. She called her time on the bench “a tremendous honor.”

Vaughn told the council that Applewood and Spicewood drives, in the Woodlands subdivision just south of Shady Grove Elementary School, were to have taken storm runoff from the Peppermill subdivision, but that those streets can’t handle the volume.

He asked the council to authorize reconstruction of Applewood and Spicewood, saying that could invove adding curb and gutter to the streets. However, Vaughn said there could be no firm cost estimate until the city engineer had looked at the situation.

The council approved the request.
