If you live in Burnet and you care about the city’s past, the city council want to talk to you. Especially if you stayed awake in history class.

The council confirmed Jennifer Cowfer to fill a vacancy on the city’s Historic Board at its meeting Tuesday, June 8, but that still leaves one board position open.

By ordinance, the five-member board includes one city staff member, one city council member or the member’s designated representative, and three members at large.

Also by ordinance, the board should “Protect and enhance the landmarks and districts which represent distinctive elements of Burnet’s historic, architectural, and cultural heritage; foster civic pride in the accomplishments of the past; and … encourage stabilization, restoration, and improvements of such (historic) properties and their values,” among other tasks.

Board members should have “a known and demonstrated interest or knowledge in historic preservation,” the ordinance says.

The board meets monthly “if business is at hand,” but special meetings also can be called as necessary.

Applications for the vacant board position can be gotten from City Secretary Kelly Dix at city offices, 1001 Buchanan Drive, Suite 4 or P.O. Box 1369, Burnet, TX 78611.
