Investigators chronicled two deaths during the Father’s Day weekend on Lake Buchanan, involving individuals recreating on the waterway, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) officials.

The “non-boating related” incidents happened on Saturday, June 19 on the Llano County side with another unrelated case occurring on Sunday, June 20 on the Burnet County side of the lake.

The first event occurred in the middle of the afternoon adjacent to Black Rock Park, located in the 2400 block of Texas 261 following a report of a kayaker missing.

“He was seen recreating in the swim area,” TPWD Capt. Cody Hatfield said. “He had been swimming and kayaking. We just don’t know what he was doing when he went missing.”

According to the report, a witness told investigators about the possible last known location of the missing person which launched the water search.

“Officers utilized side scan sonar to locate the male victim who was approximately 35 years of age,” the report stated. “Once the victim was located, the Buchanan Fire Department Dive Team recovered the victim.”

Along with the game wardens, LCRA rangers, Llano County Sheriff’s office and Buchanan Fire Rescue responded to the scene.

In the other incident a 64-year-old woman died on Sunday evening as she was “recreating” at the waterway near the location where she was residing at Bluebonnet Cove Casitas and RV Park in the 1300 block of Rhodesend Dr. in Buchanan Dam.

“Nobody saw it occur, but we know she was at the dock,” Hatfield said. “We don’t know if she suffered a medical emergency and went in. She was in the water approximately five minutes.

“CPR was performed by first responders,” he said.

A game warden arrived within minutes of the call and assisted, Hatfield continued.

“She was pronounced at the hospital,” he added.

The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
