After regional call ups were announced late Saturday evening an impressive list of Burnet swimmers and divers found their names on the state qualifiers sheet. A baker’s dozen to be exact, 13 Burnet athletes earned the opportunity to extend their season all the way to state.

In swimming there are two ways to qualify for the state meet. A swimmer must finish in the top two at regionals, a diver in the top four. After that, the next eight best times from across the state, from any region, qualify. That takes some time to calculate and leaves swimmers on the edge of their seats waiting for results. Those results were posted to the UIL board around midnight on Saturday much to the delight of many Bulldog swimmers who found their names.

Burnet had three individuals and one relay team finish with automatic qualifying totals at the regional meet, all on the girls’ side of competition.

Senior, Isabel Lunsford, had another record-breaking performance breaking school and pool records along the way. Lunsford captured a regional championship in both the 200 yard freestyle race and the 100 yard butterfly. She posted a blazing time in each, 1:55.97 in the free, and 59.84 in the fly. She is also the No. 1 seed swimmer in the state in both races.

Burnet’s girls’ 400 yard freestyle relay team placed second overall at regionals with a 3:59.05 to automatically qualify for state. Those swimmers include Elyzabeth Musiak, Graciela Lara Duran, and Isabel Lunsford. The team is ranked third heading into state.

Lady Bulldog divers Julia Jenkins and Julia Kratwell each earned automatic trips to state after placing third and fourth at regionals. Jenkins took third with a score of 251.57, and Kratwell placed fourth with a 248.06.

Burnet’s boys 200 yard medley relay team of Lucuiz Griego, Mason Hughes, Stellan Zollitsch, and Hayden Hamner placed seventh at regionals with a 1:56.83 and were called up on time.

Hayden Brown was the number one call up on time in the boys 200 yard free with a 1:56.39 for a state ticket. Brown placed third at regionals.

Aidan Zollitsch also got a call up on time for a state bid with a 23.43 which earned him fourth at regionals.

Graciela Lara Duran placed fifth in the girls 100 yard free and was call up to state with a 1:00.94.

Brown also earned a state ticket in the 100 free after placing fifth with a 52.34.

The Lady Bulldog 200 yard freestyle team of Lara Duran, Musiak, C. Lunsford, and I. Lunsford placed third at regionals with a 1:48.21 narrowly missing the automatic place of second. Their time, however, earned them a ticket to state as the No. one seed in call ups.

The boys 200 yard free relay team of A. Zollitsch, Hamner, Griego, and Brown will get to compete at state with a second best call up time of 1:34.91 after placing third.

Individually, Caroline Lunsford punched her ticket to state with a 1:07.18, a third place call up time. She placed fifth at regionals.

Griego had the best time for call ups in the 100 yard backstroke with a 1:01.04 which qualified him for state. Griego finished third at regionals.

The boys 400 free relay team of A. Zollitsch, Hamner, Grant Roberts, and Brown placed sixth at regionals, but their 3:38.28 earned them a chance to compete at state.
