Last week the Burnet soccer teams played in two district games including contests versus Marble Falls on Tuesday and Austin Achieve on Friday. The Lady Dawgs improved their standing to 7-0 in the district with two outstanding wins, while the boys suffered losses in both dropping their district record to 3-2.

The boys were on the road for both of their games last week. In Marble Falls the JV Dawgs were forced to play defense for most of the game due to close possession and steady passing by the Mustangs. Marble Falls’ JV took nearly 30 shots on goal. During his time on the field Burnet goalie Aid- en Morris did a great job defending for Burnet recording 19 saves. Eventually Marble Falls won the contest, 7-0.

The varsity contest was also tough on Burnet. Marble Falls quickly took control and the Dawgs suffered through an off game.

Genesis Ceron and Victor Aviles had their hands full defensively trying to slow the attack of Marble Falls.

The Mustangs went on to post a 10-0 win over Burnet ending the first round of 25-4A play in first place. The loss dropped Burnet to third place behind Austin Achieve.

“This was humbling, but I know that the boys will get back to work soon, and this loss was not indicative of the improvement that they have made,” said coach Ben Boorman.

On the girls’ side of competition versus Marble Falls the JV team got things started off on the right foot with a 2-1 victory.

Following that contest the much-anticipated meeting between the varsity squads took center stage. Both teams stepped on the field undefeated in district play, with Marble Falls winning all five in shut-out fashion having not allowed a single goal in district.

“This group came out with so much heart and fight until the very last minute, literally,” said coach Kim Myhre speaking of her team. “Every time Marble Falls scored, we answered with a goal.”

The game started with Marble Falls scoring in the first minute and Burnet quickly answered, 1-1. Before the half both teams scored again and at the break it was all knotted up 2-2.

Going into the last five minutes of the contest it was once again tied, 3-3.

That seemed to light a fire in Burnet’s girls who posted two goals in the final minutes of play to secure the big 5-3 win. The victory gave Burnet sole possession of first place in 25-4A play after round one.

“Coach Suarez and I could not ask for more heart or be prouder of this group,” said Coach Myhre following the game.

Brook Oliva had two goals and an assist versus Marble Falls. Amelia Griffin, Caroline Valencia and Lainey Rye each netted one goal for Burnet. Julie Suazo had two assists as did Griffin.

On Friday the soccer teams began round two with the boys at Austin Achieve and the girls hosting.

The Lady Dawgs posted another big win, 10-0 over Achieve, moving their district record to 7-0. In district play Burnet has outscored their opponents 48-5.

The boys team cameup short to Achieve, 8-0. The loss dropped their district record to 3-3.

Individual stats from these games were not yet available as of presstime. We will update you on those next week.

Both teams played at Florence on Tuesday and will host Jarrell this Friday.
