The Lady Dawgs bettered their position in the district with a big win over Jarrell on Friday night. Two weeks ago, Burnet fell short to the Lady Cougars on the road, so the victory was much needed. Before the game started the team took time to honor their seniors and their parents and then it was nothing but business for the Lady Dawgs.

Sierra Schaefer quickly put Burnet on top with a three-pointer and a Zaria Solis bucket from inside followed for a 5-0 lead. These two girls went off offensively for Burnet scoring the lion’s share of Lady Dawg points. Another Schaefer triple had Jarrell trailing 8-0 in the first four minutes of play.

The Lady Cougars finally found a bucket and a single free-throw cutting Burnet’s lead in half, 8-4.

Before the opener ended Solis chipped in another shot and Grace Gates swished a three with 35-seconds remaining making it 13-6 at the end of one.

The Lady Cougars used some free-throws to gain a little ground when the second started, but two buckets and a freethrow by Solis provided a little more cushion at 18-11.

A crowd-pleasing Solis swat was quickly followed by a Schaefer nothing-but-net triple, her third of the game. On the next Burnet possession Schaefer settled just outside the arc and sunk her fourth trey of the game and with 2:21 in the half the Lady Dawgs led 24-11.

The Jarrell bench called a time out to try and find a solution for the hot hand of Schaefer, but she couldn’t be cooled. With 20-seconds remaining in the half Schaefer posted another triple, count’em, her fifth of the game, and third in a row. At the break it was 27-11, Burnet.

Things just got worse for Burnet’s opponent in the third. Solis went to work inside and scored nine more points in the period. Seniors Christina Graves and Danielle Oakley each put a bucket on the board and with eight minutes remaining it was all Burnet, 40-15.

Schaefer picked a spot at the top of the arc and started the fourth with a triple. Gates was the next to punish Jarrell from beyond the arc. She followed that with a bucket from the key putting Burnet up 48-17 in a blink. Oakley soon rained down a three and Solis scored six-straight points to close out the quarter and the game, 57-28.

Solis led the gym with an impressive 24 points. Schaefer followed with six three-pointers for 18 points. Gates finished with eight points, Oakley, five; and Graves, two.

As of the weekend the Lady Dawgs were 4-3 in the district. They played their final conference game last night at Lago Vista. The Bi-District round of the state playoffs will begin next week.
