The Burnet tennis teams traveled to Canyon Lake last week to participate in the Hawk Winter Classic tournament. The JV squads took to the courts first with matches on Thursday in beautiful weather conditions.

“We gained a lot of match experience and tallied a few wins,” said coach Nathan Redman after Thursday’s play. “The match play provides the opportunity to practice what we’ve been learning in practice. I saw big improvements from our last competition and know these athletes will continue to grow in their ability.”

On Friday the varsity Dawgs traveled to play in Canyon Lake and faced very different weather conditions. Winds that topped out in the 30 mile an hour range made the tournament more challenging for all.

“Our Bulldogs did a great job and were up to the challenge,” said Coach Redman.

The boys doubles team of Cameron Stires and Nick Dietrich had some trouble in their first match and lost to a solid opponent. After that the duo combined to roll off three-straight victories earning the doubles consolation bracket championship.

Kinzy Davidson came up short in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champion and placed third in girls’ singles.

Tatum Salinas and Aly Van Zandt were once again dominate. The girls recorded their third-straight tournament championship in as many weeks. They defeated three teams from Navarro for the tournament crown.

“Salinas and Van Zandt have remained undefeated as a pair, including the fall season in team tennis as well,” said Redman.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15 the varsity teams will compete in Llano. Both teams will travel to Taylor for play on Feb. 23-24.
