Like many other couples and locals we know, my wife and I wear many hats. Honestly, I’ve always enjoyed picking up that cap that has allowed me to work with thousands of BHS and BMS athletes and students over the past 22 years through our photography business and sports coverage.

If you’d asked me a few months ago what my thoughts on the upcoming season were, my answer would not have been positive.

I know things can still change, and in a hurry, but this sense of normalcy we’ve been gifted over the past few weeks sure feels good.

To see the Bulldog football players all suited up and laying licks as they battle for positions is music to so many ears. Most fans are nervously optimistic that the seasons will go on.

Senior parents are ecstatic, and I’m feeling grateful to say the least.

I feel like the worst spring break finally ended, and there are lots of happy campers with sports back in play.

When I stepped into Bulldog gym last week for some volleyball action it was the first UIL sanctioned event I’d covered since last March. Coach Crystal Shipley and her high-flying squad didn’t disappoint either!

In the dual match that included Blanco and Fredericksburg Burnet’s varsity Lady Dawg team looked and played the part of a team that could make a postseason run. I’m not trying to label them something they’re not, but this group of Lady Dawgs certainly has potential with some underclassmen talent that could bounce to the varsity level at a moments notice, with skills to back up that move.

Burnet’s JV Lady Dawgs are currently 4-0 under Coach Hailey Wooten; while the freshman, coached by Brent Kelley, are looking pretty darn spiffy themselves at 3-1. So, I’m going to brag on a few players here before I close.

The first one is a young lady named Rylee Hernandez. She’s a varsity standout among a talented group. Youngens can learn a lot from Ms. Hernandez whether it be hard work pays off or simply her hustle on the court. She’s not only doing a fantastic job setting for her teammates but also setting a standard. Way to go Rylee!

Kayla Gillaspie and Caty Crow have certainly earned their due respect. But to finish off my bragging for this week I’ve chosen a young freshman talent named Mae-Syn Gay. You can bet when the Heckle Squad gets settled in that ‘she’s a freshman’ chant will be heard more than once as this 14- year old lets her light shine at the varsity level. Not only is this young star in the making handling the pressure, she’s also alleviating some from other teammates. You go girl!

Don’t forget the football teams have their final scrimmage tomorrow, Thursday Aug. 20 here in Burnet versus Lake Belton. It will be the first time they’ve lined up against another team this year. The Bulldogs season opener will also be at home on Friday, Aug. 28 versus Jarrell.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading the Burnet Bulletin.
