During its regular meeting last month, the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District board approved the addition of two elementary school teacher positions. Board members anticipate the new teachers will be hired midway through the upcoming spring semester.

After the new instructors come aboard, BCISD officials plan to seat all of its pre-kindergarten to fifth-grade pupils in classrooms at a ratio no higher than 25 students to one teacher.

“The district will continue to monitor class sizes, provide support to elementary teachers with large rosters and hire additional teachers where possible,” BCISD Superintendent Keith McBurnett said in his monthly newsletter.

According to BCISD officials, currently, the district manages 30 elementary classrooms at a student-to-teacher ratio slightly above the 22-to-1 proportion mandated by the Texas Education Agency.

As such, upon the recommendation of Assistant Superintendent Rachel Jones, the board approved an application to TEA for an exception to the 22-to-1 state requirement.

Also, during the Dec. 18 meeting in Burnet at the BCISD administration building, 208 E. Brier, board members approved new paint and exterior repairs for the Bertram Elementary School gymnasium, to improve the overall visual appearance of the entire campus.

The work is expected to be completed during the spring semester, McBurnett stated.
