Burnet, Bertram sales tax allocations soar

Defying a state trend, Burnet sales tax allocations for the month of March 2021 are more than 10 percent larger than those the city received at the same time one year ago, according to information released Wednesday by Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s office.

Total sales tax allocations for Burnet County municipalities were up $120,357.23 for March, an overall increase of 11.56 percent above the amount received in March 2020.

Besides Burnet, Bertram and Marble Falls also saw double-digit percentage increases for March 2021, while Granite Shoals and Cottonwood Shores reported gains of more than five percent. Only Horseshoe Bay saw sales tax allocations decline from last year with a decrease of 8.6 percent for the month.

Hegar announced he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $762 5 million in local sales tax allocations for March, 0.5 percent less than in March 2020. These allocations are based on sales made in January by businesses that report tax monthly.

In March 2021, Burnet County municipalities received a combined $1,161,942.28, compared to the $1,041,585.05 received during March 2020. For the year to date, the six municipalities in the county have received a combined $4,036,812.72, up $445,611.37 or 12.41 percent above the $3,591,201.35 received through the first three months of 2020.

Burnet saw the county’s second-biggest percentage increase in March 2021 at 13.58 percent from $183,897.97 last year to $208.871.39 this month. For the year, Burnet has received 22.05 percent more in sales tax allocations, going up from $621,543.53 at this point last year to $758,597.62 in 2021.

Bertram had a 10.07 percent increase overall in sales tax allocations, going from $26,305.92 in March 2020 to $28,955.74 this month. For the year, Bertram is up 13.44 percent from $91,434.69 received in 2020 to this point to $103,730.01 received through three months of 2021.

Marble Falls received a sales tax allocation of $781,927.98, or 14.53 percent above the $682,696.76 received in March 2020. The lakeside city had the largest percentage increase of any Burnet County city this month.

For the year, Marble Falls has received $2,662,350, or 11.86 percent above the $2,379,934.77 received during the first three months of 2020. Sales tax receipts make up the lion’s share of general fund revenues for the county’s largest city.

Sales tax receipts for Horseshoe Bay were down 8.6 percent in March 2021. The city, which straddles the Burnet and Llano county line, received $96,967.46, down from the $106,095.61 received in March 2020. For the year, Horseshoe Bay has received $355,219.07 compared to the $366,493.94 received during the same period last year.

Granite Shoals saw sales tax revenues rise by 5.64 percent from $28,164.80 in March 2020 to $29,753.48 this March. For the year, sales tax allocations are up 12.31 percent from $91,188.01 received through this point in 2020 to $102,414.52 received up to this point this year.

Cottonwood Shores had sales tax receipts for March 2021 go up 5.25 percent, up from $14,693.99 to $15,466.23. For the year, Cottonwood Shores has received $54,501.50, up 16.93 percent above the $46,606.41 received through this point last year.

Three cities in Burnet County - Marble Falls, Burnet and Granite Shoals - collect the maximum allowable sales tax rate of two percent, while Bertram and Horseshoe Bay collect 1.75 percent and Cottonwood Shores collects 1.5 percent.
