Burnet EDC ponders infrastructure updates

If the City of Burnet can redo parts of Houston Clinton Drive in a weekend, that will still be part of a project to add infrastructure to Economic Development Corporation (EDC) property near the intersection with U.S. Hwy. 281.

City Manager David Vaughn said the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) told him a closure “of any length of time” of the intersection would require a temporary traffic signal. That would make the Houston Clinton part of the project cost prohibitive, Vaughn said.

The intersection is controlled by a permanent signal now, but that would be disabled during construction.

Vaughn said if the project can be done over a weekend, shipments from Entegris Corporation wouldn’t be affected. Entegris ships electronic components from its facility on Houston Clinton Drive.

Sunday traffic to and from Hill Country Fellowship, also on Houston Clinton Drive, could be controlled with police officers at the intersection, Vaughn said.

The EDC has a $1.4 million loan for development of the 13.21-acre property fronting both Hwy. 281 and Houston Clinton. The work would add infrastructure and roads with an eye toward selling the property to commercial clients.

Vaughn told a July 20 meeting of the EDC board that the TxDOT response could affect the Houston Clinton project, but at that point he hadn’t spoken with a TxDOT representative. That conversation took place Wednesday, July 21.

The EDC has contracted with Fondren Construction LLC of Austin to do the infrastructure project.
