Winter Prediction

Donkey Day took place last Friday at Bertram Elementary School. Donkey Day is a standing tradition in Bertram, its very own version of Groundhog Day. Pawnee the Donkey, owned by Skip and Patsy Oertli, was on hand to project the weather, which was determined by the bowl he chose to eat from.

If he chose the bowl of oats, the forecast was for an early spring. Choosing the pellets meant a forecast of a long winter. Everyone waited excitedly as Pawnee made his way to the bowls.

After a moment of hesitation, he chose the bowl of pellets, indicating that we are in for a long winter. It is interesting to note that Pawnee has a 70% accuracy rating in these predictions, which some might say are higher than our local weather forecasters.

In addition to Pawnee and the Oertlis, Mayor Mike Dickinson was in attendance to read the proclamation, and representatives from the city of Bertram, BCISD School Board, and the Bertram Chamber of Commerce were also present.

The students really enjoy this day and getting to see Pawnee. They each got the opportunity to give him a personal “hello” before returning to class.

Some of the services offered by the Community Resource Center include education and literacy, food access, services for the elderly, housing, and financial assistance, enrolling in benefits, health and mental health benefits, and pregnancy and child resources.

Garden Flower Club

The Prairie Garden Flower Club got a fun presentation from Kailey Roberts from the Burnet County Agrilife Extension.

She was on hand at their February meeting to show them the finer points of making herb-infused butter. In addition, she shared some tips on how to flavor table salts with various herbs and gave some information about the different types of salts found in grocery stores. The club will be traveling to Georgetown next month to visit Lonestar Lettuce Growers.
