The Llano County Republican Party held its 2020 Republican County Convention this past Saturday, June 20, at the American Legion Hall in Llano. The convention was well-attended with each of the nine Republican County Precincts fielding delegates with a combined voting strength of 332.

Prior to starting the Convention, County Chairman Doug Sanders spoke to the assembled delegates and guests in which he stressed the importance of turning out the vote in the upcoming July 14 Republican primary runoff election and in the November general election. Early voting begins June 29 through July 2.

“For the sake of our children in Texas, we must elect Lani Popp (pronounced “Lawnie Pope”) to the Texas State Board of Education, and for the sake of our country, we must re-elect President Donald Trump,” Sanders said.

Lani Popp is in a runoff with Robert Morrow for the District 5 position on the State Board of Education. The LCRP generally does not endorse or oppose Republican candidates in a Republican primary, but has specifically opposed Morrow’s election in a resolution. The LCRP is also distributing pro-Lani Popp signs and anti-Robert Morrow signs.

Sanders said, “You can Google Robert Morrow and find out exactly why he is unfit for any public office, let alone the State Board of Education which determines what our children in Texas are taught and how they are educated.” Guest speakers to the con

Guest speakers to the convention included Popp, who set forth her qualifications for the SBOE position, and John Bolgiano, who is a pro-Second Amendment advocate.

The convention lasted most of the afternoon with the business of electing delegates to the Republican State Convention and passing resolutions to be forwarded to the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) taking most of the time.

Under the RPT rules, based on the voter turnout for Governor Abbott in the 2018 election, the LCRP is entitled to send 16 delegates and 16 alternate delegates to the state convention. The convention elected the following individuals to be delegates: Doug Sanders, Randy Rives, Denise Rives, Janet Mayne, Kathy Hussey, Jay Ward, Gennie Ward, Buck Kelsey, Scott Olguin, Lee Ellis, John Bolgiano, Don Graham, Becci Mears, Bob Cunningham, Liz Ellis, and Debbie Alexander.

The LCRP convention elected the following individuals to be alternate delegates: Jim Simmons, Mary Cunningham, Mike Sandoval, Paula Graham, Velma Gauny, Marla Kelsey, James (Rocky) Reese, Sara Boyd, Maria West, Dennis Bentley, Gayla Bowen, Mary (Allison) Sacra, Stephanie Hart, Marcia Hosea, Stephanie DeVault, and Cynthia Jackson.

In addition to the above listed delegates and alternate delegates, the Convention passed 11 conservative resolutions. These resolutions and a copy of Sanders’ Convention speech are posted on the LCRP’s website at llanogop. org. The Texas State Republi
