It feels like it’s been a while since I had an opportunity to check in with readers. We wanted to take a little time off for the Christmas and New Year holiday, so we did a couple of editions early and took the family to Colorado. It was a great trip and the weather, outside of some crazy wind, was beautiful.

We rented a place in the tiny town of La Veta and spent four days enjoying the company of our crew of 10 in the mountains. We woke up Christmas morning with the most incredible views, stayed in our pajamas all day, cooked way too much food, played games for hours, and simply slowed down enough to enjoy each other.

Our favorite journey came on the day after Christmas. We drove up the mountain side and found a pristine lake at 10,000 feet. It was crystal blue and beautiful and provided a nice backdrop for a family photo as the snow fell around us.

It was a great family trip.

Last week we published our end of year review. It’s always a favorite edition of mine. I enjoy going back and seeing the accomplishments of the Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs over the span of a year. I noticed when reading back over the pages that several athletes set new school records in 2021. Most of those student athletes were underclassmen so there is a good chance those record will be improved upon again in 2022.

I have a few shout-outs to share this week, ladies first.

Congratulations to Lady Bulldog senior volleyball player Rylee Hernandez. Miss Hernandez was named to the All-State Volleyball team recently for her contributions as Burnet’s setter. Hernandez and her Lady Dawgs advanced all the way to the Regional Tournament in 2021, that accomplishment has only been matched once in the history of Burnet’s program. Rylee was a varsity member of the Lady Bulldog volleyball team for three years. She ended her career with 2,010 assists, 285 kills, 595 digs, 97 aces, and 38 blocks. She leaves some big shoes to fill. Congratulations Rylee on your selection!

Varsity Lady softball senior Savannah Gomez was honored in a ceremony on

Friday when she made it official with Concordia. Gomez signed her name on the dotted line committing to play softball for the Lady Tornados in the spring of 2023. She has work remaining on the diamonds in Burnet and is expected to be a big contributor for the Lady Dawgs this spring. Gomez cranked seven homeruns in her junior campaign and helped lead Burnet to their first playoff appearance since 2016. Congrats on your signing Savannah.

The Lady Dawg basketball team defeated Jarrell on Friday to open district play 1-0. All six teams were off on Tuesday and all six will be in Burnet this Friday hosting Salado for their district openers. Basketball is going back to a schedule where all teams, boys and girls, will play in the same locations. Games begin at 5:00 p.m. with the final contests sched uled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

District diving and swimming will take place later this month. Softball starts practice this week and baseball will soon follow. The soccer teams are busy with tournament play, and all the other spring sports are anxiously awaiting their beginning. Welcome back to all of them.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading the Burnet Bulletin.
