Several days ago the historic bridge at Joppa was decorated with Christmas Lights. The successful decoration event was mentioned in my last column. Now I would like to include some information about the bridge itself.

Of course, those families who have always lived in the Joppa community know much about the history of the bridge.

However, several new people are moving into the area. And, perhaps someone from out-of-town may have driven by and noticed the lights.

The bridge is known as an Iron Truss Bridge. On January 17, 1906 a bond election was held and passed that would fund three Truss Bridges, one of which would be constructed near the Joppa School and Church. It was constructed in 1907. Of the three, the Joppa Bridge is the only one still standing.

The bridge is over the North Fork of the San Gabriel River on CR200 near Bertram. The Iron Truss Bridge is no longer used and was bypassed by a news bridge in 2000.

The Joppa Bridge was very important as it facilitated travel among surrounding communities. Additionally, it enabled more access to higher education for the youth of the area. Prior to 1900 young people in rural communities were mostly limited to an elementary or junior high education.

Viewing this lovely decorated bridge at night, when the area all about it is in the dark, brings a special meaning to the word “awesome” for me. I felt I had traveled to a magic place.

The historic information mentioned above comes from text contained on the Historical Maker located next to the bridge.
