Gov. Greg Abbott recently presented to Timothy Pierce the Star of Texas award. The former Burnet and current Marble Falls Fire Department firefighter and paramedic received the award for his “profound commitment” to duty. Seven years ago, Pierce and fellow firefighter Daniel Hampton operated an ambulance to assist the transfer of a patient from Burnet to Seton Hospital. Tragically, the ambulance and heavy vehicle collided at high speed en route to the hospital. Although critically injured, Pierce removed Hampton and the patient from the ambulance. Unfortunately, Hampton died soon after the collision, and the patient suffered more injury. Pierce returned to full duty after several months of rehabilitative treatment.

Several other first responders from various parts of the state received the Texas award from Abbott during a ceremony Sept. 9 in Austin. The same day, the governor declared Sept. 11, 2022 as “Texas First Responders Day.”
