I’m starting this week’s editorial with a huge congratulatory shout-out to the Burnet Lady Dawg volleyball family. The Lady Dawgs incredible record matching season came to an end Friday in Bryan at the Regional Tournament to the Bellville Lady Brahmas.

The Lady Dawgs made lots of memories this season and took their fans on an incredible ride full of entertainment.

A little special recognition to our eight Lady Dawg seniors. You ladies may not know it yet, but your actions, your countless hours of hard work and dedication to this program will trickle down for years to come.

You quietly inspired many young girls who dream to be in your shoes one day. Seems like yesterday you guys were those little fifth and sixth-graders maybe hoping to someday be like a Madison Hall or a Marissa Escamilla, fill in the blank, we’ve had a lot of greats. Now some of your names will fill those blanks.

The ones to come will strive to better your mark; you eight seniors have certainly helped raised the bar.

Best wishes to each of you, thank you for your contributions.

My past week was full of excitement including watching my Mom’s hometown team, the Eldorado Eagles play in a thriller football game right here in Burnet.

Down 27-7 in fourth quarter play the Eagles found a way to win. Their comeback 35-33 victory over Somerville is one of those instant classic games that’ll be reflected on for decades to come.

For me there were several stories that unfolded within that game that reminded me how small this world is at times.

After Friday’s volleyball game we made our way over to Brenham where the Marble Falls Mustang football team was playing a Bi-District game versus Brenham.

It was a weird feeling, and some may even question my die-hard Bulldog sanity.

Yes, I was right there on the Mustang sidelines snapping away catching some great memories for a rival team, and for our small town sister paper. The game was an intoxicating double-overtime cliffhanger.

Near the end I was standing right there in the back of the endzone by Marble Falls sports reporters Nathan Hendrix and Jennifer Fierro making Mustang fan-like comments hoping the purple defense could make the stop to preserve a win over a team nobody gave them a chance against. They did, 27-21.

It was an hour out of our way but we’re sure glad we went, and our shots are just a small token.

As most of you know, small town papers are fading fast, as support for the papers fall by the wayside that paper soon follows.

Sometimes you don’t realize the importance of something until it’s gone.

Throughout the states many have closed shop, tough decisions and cuts are having to be made. So, if you like your local smalltown paper no matter where you live supporting them is something to think about.

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading the Burnet Bulletin.
