In early June I heard many wondering out loud just what had happened to the Texas heat bubble that usually shows up in late May. This year it was held off by several weeks of rainy and cloudy weather that kept the temperature gage mostly in check; that is until last week.

For those of us that have lived in Texas for a while we weren’t surprised, but when the humidity and heat join forces like they did last week it can be hard to handle, even for a southern native.

On Wednesday, some family members and I traveled to Austin to watch the Stephenville Yellowjackets play the Pleasant Grove Hawks in the 4A State Semi-final game at Disch-Falk Field. It was a miserably hot day, but we were thrilled to be there. Our middle son, Jes, is the athletic trainer for the Yellowjackets and he kept us up to date on their successes throughout the season.

Unfortunately, for the Jackets, things started out rough in the semi-finals and Texarkana Pleasant Grove built a 4-0 lead after just one inning of play. They eventually went on to advance to the state final after beating Stephenville, 13-0.

Stephenville ended their season with a 28-9-1 record.

On the other side of the 4A bracket Rusk defeated Sinton 6-3 in the semi-final.

On Thursday Pleasant Grove beat Rusk, 2-1 to earn the 4A state championship. Rusk finished their year, 28-8, Pleasant Grove, 35-8.

The 5A baseball state tournament also had a Burnet alumni in the mix.

Chad Krempin, a 1991 Burnet High School graduate, led his Rouse Raiders all the way to the state semi-finals where they met up with Hallsville. Coach Krempin and the Raiders defied the odds making it all the way to state after finishing fourth in the district. The Raiders advanced to the state tournament after defeating Dripping Springs in an elimination game that stretched into 14 innings of play.

Unfortunately, Rouse fell short in the semi-finals to Hallsville just one game shy of a state championship bid. The Raiders ended their season 30-11. This was the fourth team Coach Krempin has led to the state tournament. In February he recorded his 400 win as a head baseball coach.

It’s rare that I get to use my editorial space to say congratulations for things non-sports related, but I couldn’t help but notice the fantastic week the Kiser were having. Coach Roy Kiser and his wife Gina welcomed their first grandchild to the world on Sunday. The little boy born to Derek and Shelby was named Hudson Roy Kiser. On Saturday, their family’s celebrations continued as Burnet alumni Drew Kiser and Paris Brinkley tied the knot. What a week. Congrats to all!

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading the Burnet Bulletin.
